Moot Court Competition
The BRU Foundation organised the Second National Moot Court Competition in arbitration in Nepal, at Radisson Hotel, Nepal on Saturday, September 15, 2019. Of the seven law schools that were invited for the competition, five law schools from within the valley and Pokhara participated. The Moot Court Competition was organized along with Nepal Law Campus, as the partner institution.
Experienced arbitrators sat as Judges to adjudge the students, and provided them with feedback as to how they can be better mooters/ arbitrators. The competition was started with the intention to have students to learn and understand the niceties of arbitration and encourage mooting culture in Nepal.
Kathmandu School of Law won the competition, along with the prize of Best Memorial. Rosy Shrestha of Kathmandu School of Law won the prize of Best Speaker. National Law College won the prize of Runners Up. The event was graced by Chairperson of SAARC Law, Hon’ble Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla, where she gave positive remarks about the knowledge imparted by the seminar.
Seminar on Investment Treaties
For the first time in Nepal, BRU Foundation organized a Seminar on Investment Treaties, followed by the Moot Court Competition. The Seminar was attended by government officials, lawyers, academics, students and judges.
Mr. Dinesh Bhattarai, Joint Secretary, Industrial and Investment Promotion Division Ministry of Industries, Commerce and Supplies made a presentation on Nepal’s legal regime in relation to investment climate. This was followed by an educative session by Mr. Ben Sanderson, DLA Piper, Spain present on the topic of BIT between Nepal. Mr. Abhileen Chaturvedi, Economic Law Practices, Mumbai, spoke about the Indian experience for BIT. Sr. Adv. Purna Man Shakya, Reliance Law Firm, Executive Committee Member, SAARC Law Nepal; India also presented on the difficulties faced by the SARC region as a whole in relation to enforcement of awards and judgments and reciprocity between the countries. Each presentation was followed by a question answer session.
